Dog Microchipping FAQ's
In honor of Anderson Subaru and SouthBARK Rescue's Don't Lose Your Love Microchipping Event, we've compiled a list of frequently asked questions & answers about the pet microchipping process:
Q: Will it hurt my pet when he gets the microchip implanted?
A: It won't hurt any more than a routine vaccination - having a microchip implanted doesn't even require anesthetic. There's a good chance your pup won’t even flinch!
Q: How is the microchip inserted?
A: The microchip comes preloaded in a sterile applicator and is injected under the loose skin between the shoulder blades. The process takes only a few seconds, and your pet will not react any more than he would to a vaccination.
Q: How big is the microchip?
A: The microchip is roughly the size of a grain of salt.
Q: How does it work?
A: When a microchip scanner is passed over the skin of a microchipped pet, the implanted microchip emits an RF (radio frequency) signal. The scanner reads the microchip's unique ID code. The microchip registry is called, and the registry company uses the ID number to retrieve the pet parent's contact information from the pet recovery database.
Q: Will my pet still need to wear a collar?
A: All pets should wear collar tags imprinted with their name and the phone number of their pet parent, but only a microchip provides permanent ID that cannot fall off, be removed, or become impossible to read.
Q: How much does it cost to microchip my pet?
A: The average cost to have a microchip implanted by a veterinarian is around $100, after visit fees and registration of the microchip. However, Anderson Subaru and SouthBARK will be offering dog microchipping at a reduced cost. Your $20 donation includes the insertion of the microchip (roughly the size of a grain of rice) and lifetime registration.
